Across the United States, the Congressional Art Competition is underway once again. Each spring, Members of the U.S. House of Representatives offer high school students in their districts the opportunity to compete to have their artwork displayed in the Cannon Tunnel, which connects the U.S. Capitol to the Cannon House Office Building. This is a rare opportunity and great privilege since countless Members of Congress, federal officials, Congressional staffers, and visitors from across the country and world pass by this exhibit. This year’s new display will be unveiled in June. The artwork of the first place winner for each district will hang in the Capitol for a whole year.
Each year the winners from participating Congressional districts are invited to attend a reception at the Capitol. In Washington, they will have an opportunity to hear from Representative Donna Edwards (D-MD) and Representative Leonard Lance (R-NJ), the co-chairs of the Competition. Additionally, Representatives Edwards and Lance will each invite a member of the artistic community from their districts to speak to the students. The students will conclude the day by visiting with their own Members of Congress.
Last year, nearly 400 Members of the House of Representatives participated, and about that many are expected to participate again. The Congressional Art Competition was first held in 1982 and has continued to grow ever since. Over the past 30 years, hundreds of thousands of high school students have competed for the chance to have their art displayed in Washington, DC.

Additionally, the submission deadlines for some districts have already passed.
